Illegal Turkish cigarettes sale chain busted in Ruse

2010-02-01

Officers with the mobile customs teams seized more than 2,600 boxes of cigarettes in the frames of a check-up on an illegal warehouse in the Northern town of Ruse.
All cigarettes had a ‘duty free' label and a health warning sign written in English. There were 810 boxes of Eva Slims, 1,500 boxes of Marilyn and 290 boxes of Raquel cigarettes.
The cigarettes were found in the vehicle and garage of a person with initials M.Ts. The 40-year-old retired military officer used to tour the town with his car and sells the illegal cigarettes to commercial outlets and private persons.
The man used his garage for a warehouse. During the interrogation he said he used to buy the cigarettes at BGN 1.80 from Turkish bus drivers, who buy them from the duty-free shops. The Turkish drivers used to smuggle the cigarettes by sharing out the cartons among the bus passengers.
All the cigarettes have been confiscated. Work on the case continues.
