Customs officers in Ruse hamper smuggling of 40,000 boxes of cigarettes, 400 bottles of vodka


Customs officers in the Northern town of Ruse hampered an attempt to smuggle 40,000 boxes of cigarettes and 400 bottles of vodka.
On 22.02.2010, in the area of the Danube Bridge border checkpoint, officers with the Customs Intelligence and Investigation with the Customs Ruse, stopped a bus with Russian registration for a check-up. During the search, customs officers found 80 master-boxes (40,000 boxes) of cigarettes and around 400 bottles of vodka, smuggled on the territory of the European Union.
The vodka is Russian and Ukrainian of the Stolichnaya and Hlebniy Dar brands.
The cigarettes were of the brands Karelia (with a ‘duty free' sign) and Prima Lux (with Ukrainian excise label). The cigarettes were hidden in the fabric cavities of the bus, which was travelling from Russia to Greece.
The smuggled goods are worth around BGN 165,000, while the harm that could have been caused to the state budget - BGN 142,598.
