5 mln pieces of smuggled cigarettes, seized by Customs Svilengrad, destroyed

Nearly 5 million pieces of contraband cigarettes were destroyed in the incinerators of Holcim Bulgaria company, Beli Izvor.
The cigarettes were of the LM brand and were destroyed in line with the memorandum of cooperation between the Bulgarian National Custom Agency (NCA) and the Philip Morris Bulgaria EOOD. Officers with the Customs Svilengrad and the mobile customs group took part in the organisation and the process of the cigarettes' destruction.
The destroyed cigarettes were seized by the officers of the Customs Svilengrad in two similar cases in 2010 and 2011.
Both seizures were at the Kapitan Petko Voyvota checkpoint at the Bulgarian-Greece border. The illegal tobacco products were found in two foreign trucks entering the territory of the Bulgaria.
The only difference between the two seizures is the shipment in which the cigarettes were hidden. The first truck was transporting bananas, while second one - oranges.
Some 99 million pieces of cigarettes were destroyed by the NCA in 2011, while more than 113 million in 2010.
