1 million pieces of illegal cigarettes found in TIR truck at Danube Bridge

Ruse. 1 million peaces of illegal cigarettes were seized at the Danube Bridge border crossing in a joint operation of Customs Office Ruse and Combating Organized Crimes unit, press centre of the National Customs Agency (NCA) announced. Cigarettes were found in a Moldovan transit TIR truck, which a day earlier came into Bulgaria from Turkey. The truck tried to cross the Bulgarian-Romanian border on Saturday, but customs officers noticed that the seal is broken. The TIR truck was redirected for a detailed check with the mobile scanner. The device found cartons of cigarettes and the vehicle has been subjected to scrutiny by officers of customs and anti-mafia. Total of 100 master cases of cigarettes were found. Their value is estimated at BGN 375 000 and the excise duty on the found 1 million pieces of cigarettes is BGN is 187,250. The truck driver V.D. (48) said he was unaware of the existence of these cigarettes in the vehicle. According to documents the truck was transporting lavatory pans and ceramic bathroom accessories.
The case was reported to the prosecution.
