Customs officers with the Customs Burgas foiled three attempts of smuggling large amount of silver over the past few hours.
The seizures come in the frames of a special customs operation on the territory within the authority of Customs Burgas.
In the first seizure authorities found 106.862 kilos of silver bars at the Malko Tarnovo customs checkpoint.
Meanwhile, undeclared currency and Russian roubles worth more than BGN 50,000 and 840 boxes of smuggled cigarettes without excise stamps were seized from two ships in Burgas during customs checks.
The silver bars seized at Malko Tarnovo were aimed to be transported to Turkey. They were found in a Mercedes jeep car with Romanian registration. The silver bars were hidden in a computer cardboard box put in vehicle's luggage booth and under the driver's seat.
The silver bars were aimed for the black market in Turkey, with the purpose to be melted and then used for the making of silver jewellery.
The silver and the vehicle were confiscated to the benefit of the state. A pre-court proceeding was initiated against the driver.
The smuggled currency was found during a customs check on a ship sailing under Russian flag. The currency was found in captain's cabin, where customs authorities also found 340 boxes of cigarettes without excise stamps.
Other 500 boxes of smuggled cigarettes were found during a customs check on another ship, sailing under the flag of the Republic of Togo.
