Bulgarian customs officers seize over 13 million contraband cigarettes

2012-11-13
Bulgarian customs officers at Kulata checkpoint have seized a record huge amount of over 13 million contraband cigarettes in the night.
The cigarettes were found in a truck with a foreign license plate number which was driven by a foreigner. They are of a trademark unregistered and unknown in Bulgaria - "Omega". The cigarettes were packed and loaded in an unusual way. It is yet to be established whether they were aimed for the Bulgarian market.
Customs experts describe as innovative the attempt to conceal the contraband behind a complex combination of untrue and misleading documents. The customs officers tracked the documents and found the contraband.
Pre-trial proceedings were launched and Blagoevgrad District Prosecutor's Office was notified.
