Bulgaria customs detain 17 illegal immigrants in ‘marble sarcophagi’

2013-05-14
Seventeen illegal immigrants, hidden inside two 18-ton blocks of marble, were detained by the customs officers with the Customs Lom.
A mobile customs group stopped a truck transporting two marble blocks and exiting the territory of Bulgaria for a check. The truck was with foreign registration and was driven by a Romanian national.
Following the risk analysis method the customs officers selected the vehicle for an x-ray check, in which they detected that the two marble blocks had been hollowed out like sarcophagi and were ‘full' of people.
Customs authorities took out a total of 17 illegal immigrants. They said they were citizens of Somalia, Tunisia and Afghanistan.
The case has been referred to the Border Police.
