Bulgarian customs officers seize 1,3 million contraband cigarettes


Bulgarian customs officers have found and seized 1,3 million contraband cigarettes at Kapitan Petko Voyvoda border checkpoint.
The cigarettes were found in a van with a Bulgarian license plate which was traveling from Greece to Bulgaria. According to its documents the vehicle was transporting second-hand automotive tires. During a check the customs officers found 950,000 cigarettes from one brand and 350,000 more cigarettes from another brand. They all did not have excise stamps and bore a notice Duty Free Sales Only. The total amount of the cigarettes is 1,3 million, or 65,000 boxes.
The contraband cigarettes are worth BGN 273,000 and the prevented losses from excise duty ran to BGN 194,090.
Pre-trial proceedings were opened.
