Bulgaria anti-smuggling unit busts illicit cigarettes at Kulata checkpoint

Bulgarian customs and interior ministry officers busted large amount of illicit cigarettes at the Kulata border checkpoint.
On Saturday, a freight vehicle with Czech registration, driven by a Czech national (aged 51), arrived at the border checkpoint. According to the presented documents, the truck was transporting different kinds of goods to Austria and the Czech Republic.
A unit against smuggling, violations and crimes connected with VAT, which is comprised of police and customs officers, selected the vehicle for a check with a mobile x-ray. The examination was followed by a thorough check, which detected that in part of the transported goods - distribution frameworks, there were hidden a total of 24,300 boxes (486,000 pieces) of cigarettes without excise stamps.
The driver of the truck was arrested. An investigation is underway.
