Bulgarian customs officers at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint busted a record-big heroin haul.
The drug was found in a car with Bulgarian registration, travelling from Turkey to Bulgaria, driven by a Bulgarian citizen.
Following the risk analysis method, customs officers selected the vehicle for a thorough check in which they discovered a hidden compartment in the back seat of the car, which was full of 140 packages wrapped in carbon paper. Each package contained powder substance. The drug test made on the field responded to heroin.
The total amount of the heroin is 73.380 kilos, worth nearly BGN 8.8 million.
Customs inspectors comment that this is the biggest amount of heroin smuggled in a car busted over the past five years.
The driver of the car was arrested. Work on the case continues.
Over the past couple of months customs inspectors have seized a total of 178 kilos of drugs, some 100 kilos of which were heroin. The figures are the best reports over the past years.
